In praise of mentors / May 14, 2009
Dear Viewpoint:

It was Margaret Meade who wrote, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.”

The Mentor/Role Model Program, Inc. is grateful for being the beneficiary of community partners who have given of themselves and their resources to help us in our mission to make a lasting impact on and in the lives of the youth of this county.

On May 2, ”Take a Kid Fishing Day” was sponsored by Mac and Brenda McDannald, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hetzel, and the Halifax County Sportsman Club.

The children enjoyed a fun-filled day full of good fishing, good food and good fellowship. The children received new fishing rods and reels, many were awarded trophies, and all the children received medallions.

On May 7, the annual Awards Banquet was held at the South Boston Early Learning Center. Seventy-five awards were given to children in the Mentor program who have shown remarkable progress during this school year. The banquet would was a huge success because of the many individuals and businesses who helped to sponsor it. They are: N2Memories by Arlene Royster, Windmill Farm and Bake Shop, Creative Cake Shoppe, Reaves Trophy Shop, Mentors, Mentor/Role Model Program, Inc. board members, Mr. Frank Lee, Burger King (Riverdale), Wal-Mart, Halifax County Public Schools

Many, many thanks to all those who help build the lives of our children.

Laurietta J. Faulkner
