Dear Viewpoint: Looks like the McLaughlin family is pretty much in charge of this newspaper. I am reading about Sgt. Meredith and his self created problem — it seems to me that with the military training he has had, some restraint on his part could have been beneficial — self control maybe. What if he had just ignored these kids — none of this would be going on. It is only causing racial strife in the community, which could have been avoided, and it will serve no purpose. I personally think this was a little beneath Sgt. Meredith, and we are definitely indebted to him for his service and that of his family. He should not have stooped to their level. The Confederate flag is part of this country’s history and it cannot be erased — we must move on — trying to erase history is not possible — I really thought we had, but maybe not? Either way, this kind of incidence is not helpful and creating a fight now about something that happened 150 years or so ago is absolutely ridiculous. You can print this if you want to.
