The full gallop of life in law practice always made it easy to bypass what then seemed to be mundane community affairs. As I begin grooving into the slower pace of anticipated retirement I’ve had more opportunity to reflect upon what it’s been that’s made my life here in Halifax County such a pleasure. It’s not difficult to see, it’s the people, nice people, working people, young folks, old folks, some retired, some active, some cranky, some busting with joy, various nationalities and races, various religions and various gifts. Taken all together it’s a great dynamic culture, making home here a great place to spend a life. Looking back it’s nothing like it was in the 50’s, but even then it was a great community, it’s just we are an even better spot today.
One of the great pleasures in recent years has been watching the growth of my wife’s café business, Southern Plenty.
There I’ve had the opportunity to see and meet a cross section of our county in a different venue from that to which I’m accustomed (the courthoom)! More recently Mary’s business has been frequented by the cast and families from the summer stock productions at the Prizery. Talk about a breath of fresh air, these people are wonderful. They are an extraordinarily nice group of well-educated young men and women from across the nation, brought here, to Halifax County by the Prizery. Of course, we only have them for a short while, this year for the Prizery’s two superb musical productions. It’s a shame their stay was so brief because it’s just this sort of dynamic that makes our county so marvelous. Where else can you be so out in the country, munching on fresh silver queen and cantaloupes, with productions like Les Miserables just on the other side of the creek? And how far will you go to find another community this size frequented by so many wonderful bright young actors!
Purely from a business perspective these young people, their families and guests have brought our café, and I suspect other businesses as well, a significant increase in patrons, but what really stuck out is the character of life they bring to our county, one that shouts Halifax is not standing still, that we won’t be content to rest in the cobwebs.
I so love this county, it’s people, where we’ve been, where we are, where we’re going, and I see one of the powerful forces propelling our county forward has been the dedication and foresightedness of the Prizery Team, who continues to bring culture, history, class and most important, nice people, into our community. Be a part of the dynamic that makes us better.
