Dear Viewpoint:

On Monday, October 6, 2014, the Supreme Court of the United States refused to hear cases regarding the unconstitutionality of laws in several states that defined marriage as being between a man and a woman. Many have said this settles the matter, arguing that the definition of marriage as the uniting of a man and woman is outdated and bound for the trash heap of history. Whether or not that debatable political point is the case, for Christians who believe the Bible as God’s inerrant and authoritative word, this changes nothing. Nothing is changed for, in reality, the matter was settled long, long ago!

Regardless of what judges, courts, politicians, or anyone else says (or refuses to say)...”the word of the Lord stands forever.” In Genesis at the creation of the human race, God said the following: “Therefore a man (male) shall leave his father (male) and his mother (female) and hold fast to his wife (female), and they shall become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24) In the New Testament Jesus, himself said the same thing when speaking of how marriage was intended from the beginning (Matthew 19:5, Mark 10:7). The Apostle Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit said the same things when writing regarding marriage (Ephesians 5:31). It is undeniable what God intended and has instructed.

As upsetting as this ruling (actually, non ruling) may be to those of us who value the only real definition of marriage...We can take comfort in knowing that it really changes nothing. God is still God. His Word is still authoritative. Marriage is still between a man and woman. The true church (all, everywhere who believe) as well as the local church where I am a pastor will still hold to and preach the same gospel and uphold the same understanding of marriage that God has delivered unto us by God Himself in His word.

That is right. Fear not friends, nothing has changed. Activists, politicians, and judges are simply not as powerful as they think they are. They may try (and even appear to succeed) to redefine words and “do what is right in their own eyes”...but that does not change what “thus saith the Lord.”

People often say “when the next generation(s) looks back on our day I want to be on the right side of history regarding this issue”. Well, for the record — I could not care less what mankind, in the sense of cultural whims, thinks of me...For I do not serve and will not ultimately answer to man, but God.
