On the brink

The fix we find ourselves in as citizens of America is also the moment many of us have been dreading — when the venality, incompetence and bad faith of the White House under Donald Trump would finally drag the country to the brink of crisis.

Keeping it real

Sliding ever closer to the fire:

Casual disregard

Seeing as how they’re in charge of spending $100 million-plus in taxpayer dollars on a new facility, you would think members of the Mecklenburg CountySchool Board would be maximally attuned to the need to be transparent and accountable in everything they do — actually a minimal standard for any public official to uphold, but never more so than when high stakes are involved. You’d think trustees would understand all this. Apparently not.

How did we get here?

What a difference a couple of weeks makes: Go back that far in time and not many people had Virginia’s 5th District on their radar as a battleground for control of Congress in November.

How did we get here?

I’d like to make an early nomination for 2018’s most prophetic headline, from a full eight days ago at Slate.com: “What Is Even Going on With GOP Congressman Tom Garrett?”

A bad feeling about this

New directions

Okay, I have something to say about the proposed design of Mecklenburg County’s consolidated school complex: there’s one element of the plan that people gave up for dead as soon as the cost estimate hit light of day, but this is regrettable: I am referring, of course, to the idea of building a $10.5 million aquatics center. Fuggetaboutit, right? Before the idea disappears entirely into the ether, hear me out in its defense.

Heavy lift

Leave it for November

Having grown up in the little town of Halifax and now living in the bustling city of South Boston, I get that the alpha-ville latter doesn’t appreciate taking its cues from the pipsqueak former. But how about we all just set aside our pride and do, um, the right thing?

Get smart

Quick question: Like Snow White throwing shade at her stepmother, which town in Mecklenburg County is fairly smartest of all?
