Debs heading back to World Series

The Halifax Dixie Debs are headed back to World Series play in Powhatan. The Debs combined excellent pitching, generally strong defense and stout power to complete their state title run in Kenbridge. The Debs start World Series play back in the Old Dominion with opening ceremonies on Aug. 3. The Debs start play on Saturday, Aug. 4, against Georgia.

In the end, the state berth in the American Junior Legion tournament came down to pulse-pounding baseball drama in South Boston’s final at-bat Tuesday night.

Clark receives softball honors

Stephanie Clark, a member of the Roanoke College Maroons softball team, was recently tabbed with second-team accolades in the 2012 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division. Leading the team in hitting with an average of .404, Clark was named a member of the Newport News Regional All-Tournament Team and All-Region Team, leading all batters during the tournament, hitting 9-for-13 for a mark of .692. Clark led the team this season in doubles (17), which ranked in the all-time single season record book. She also led in RBIs with 42 and boasted the highest slugging percentage on the team with a mark of .695. Clark was also named to the 2012 ODAC/StellarOne Softball Sportsmanship Team. “I am pleased that the conference recognizes student-athletes for their focus on fair play and sportsmanship,” explained ODAC Commissioner Brad Bankston.
