Lady Comets show of support in battle against breast cancer

South Boston News
The Halifax County High School varsity and jayvee softball teams celebrated an important event Friday night, Striking out Breast Cancer. The event raised at least $2,100, as a check was presented by the softball programs to the local Cancer society following the varsity game. There was a balloon release Friday held between the JV and varsity games. Person County, Friday’s Comet opponent, also showed its support for this fund-raising charity event, and the schools plan a similar outreach when the Rockets and Comets meet again in Roxboro. HCHS varsity softball coach Melanie Saunders expressed her appreciation to everyone involved in the charity effort. “This was far more than we expected, a lot more fans, a lot more support. We were hoping to ... maybe sell about 100 t-shirts. We ended up selling probably close to 350, if not more, here tonight,” said Saunders. The Comets also had sold about 600 balloons as a part of the fund-raiser. Saunders noted, “We ... here as coaches to make these kids better softball players. We also want to remind them they need ... to think about other things besides just the game of softball. This is a huge lesson in life and empathy towards others ... To come out this strong in a cause like this is pretty awesome.” (Blakely Swanson photo)
