Halifax Fight Team hosts MMA open mat event in South Boston

The Halifax Fight Team is hosting a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) open mat event in South Boston on Saturday, May 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Adams Total Fitness. Amateur MMA fighters from around the area will be sparring and working on their technique at the training session and mat event. The Halifax Fight Team consists of two founding members, Joshua Cook and Ray Kahler, and several other fighters: Jasper Scott (boxer and wrestler style), Charlie Conner (boxer and jiu jitsu style), Demetrius Dye (striker style), Brandon Perkins (freestyle kickboxing and submission wrestling), Jeremy Culley (the team’s newest member), and several others. Conner, Perkins, Cook, and Kahler are all competing in a July 15 event in Independence, Va. By hosting the South Boston open mat event, the Halifax Fight Team aims to showcase the sportsmanship of MMA fighting and help the visiting fighters improve their skills, while promoting the sport in Southside Virginia.

The Halifax County High School freshman football team pitched a 22-0 shutout at Franklin County Thursday.

Cross country gets preview of Piedmont

The Halifax County High Schoo cross country team competed against most of the Piedmont District on Wednesday at Magna Vista High School. The Comet girls finished second to Bassett High, and the boys were second to Martinsville.

Starke plays key role in JMU’s win

Former Comet Cameron Starke had a key field goal in James Madison University’s 27-26 double overtime win over William and Mary. Starke was good from 18 to send the game into the second extra session.
