TAKING AIM - Veteran James McGee takes aim during the archery competition at the Cove Thursday. McGee was part of the approximately 50-strong group of American heroes out at the Cove Thursday to participate in a special event to honor the nation's military veterans brought to reality by the Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation.
U.S. Marine Corps and Army veteran James McGee appreciated Thursday’s special event at the Cove, honoring American heroes in a sun-drenched, peaceful setting, highlighting the special camaraderie military veterans understand.

Track teams continue respectable effort

The Halifax County High School boys and girls’ track teams had very respectable efforts at the VMI High School Classic Saturday, at Read Stadium in Lexington.

Bailey heads to Hargrave

BAILEY HEADING TO HARGRAVE – Comet football player Shaq Bailey Thursday officially signed a letter of commitment to play for the Hargrave Military Academy post-grad football program this fall. He was joined by his mother Latarsha Womack and former Comet head football coach Stan Hodgin.
Nothing is guaranteed, and he must complete one rigorous year of very competitive football and demanding academics, but Shaq Bailey likely put himself in position to land a football grant-in-aid a year from now.
