DETROIT - The NCAA’s basketball cathedral at Ford Field hosts a potentially electrifying national title game tonight, matching the local favorite, Michigan State, against the team seen by many national experts as the favorite all along, North Carolina. The Tar Heels bolted to an early lead and later refused to crack in key situations against Villanova late Saturday night, returning to the title game for the second time in the Roy Williams era. The Atlantic Coast Conference, blessed with an abundance of high-octane athleticism, failed to emphasize defense properly, and the ACC paid a price with an underachieving postseason.
