Hayes gets win

ALTON, Va. — Josh Hayes delayed Matt Mladin’s championship celebration with a dominant performance in Saturday’s American Superbike race at VIR. Hayes, the pole winner, never trailed from the start en route to his fourth win of the season. Even Hayes was surprised at how good his bike was.

Mladin closes in on title ... retirement

ALTON, Va. — Mat Mladin took the final sip of his Rockstar Energy Drink and smoothly flipped it behind his back into the nearby trashcan. Much like riding his motorcycle, Mladin made it look effortless. Yet, even as he’s zeroed in on a record seventh American Superbike championship, few are aware at just how difficult it’s been for the 37-year-old to ride his No. 7 Rockstar Makita Suzuki in recent months. While Mladin’s skills haven’t diminished, his focus and desire to race has. The same weekend that he decided to skip the race at Heartland Park Topeka two weeks ago, Mladin announced that he was hanging it up at the completion of the 2009 season.

Usual suspects top ACC preseason

There’s a scene in the Hollywood classic Casablanca in which the police captain, played by Claude Raines, arrives at a murder investigation and defiantly tells his officers to ‘round up the usual suspects’. It’s a command that could easily be applied to the ACC’s preseason football poll.
