Speaking of sports for April 30, 2009

Former Comet Jeremy Jeffress continued his progress at Double AA Huntsville. Jeffress has lowered his ERA to 2.25, with 22 strikeouts and 12 walks in 16 innings. Jeffress is now 1-1 on the season. More progress like this, and Jeffress will be in the headlines in Milwaukee sooner or later.

Pulling double duty

It’s all part of the learning curve for a young racer. Jeb Burton pulled double duty this past weekend, competing in NASCAR short track racing at South Boston Speedway on Saturday night and on a specialized short track circuit Sunday at Virginia International Raceway Sunday. Burton, still only 16, is further ahead in NASCAR racing at SBS. He finished fourth in limited sportsman action at SBS, and 23rd in the Volkswagen Jetta TDI event at VIR.

Comets rebound

Halifax County rebounded from a tough loss at Tunstall, getting excellent pitching from Tyler Lewis in a 3-1 win over archrival GW-Danville Friday night. HCHS improved to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in the district. GW is 10-4 overall and 2-3 in the WVD.
