ATLANTA - When Dave Leitao came to Charlottesville four years ago he said that Virginia basketball had become “irrelevant” on the college basketball landscape. Recruits paid the Cavaliers’ program no mind. March Madness had become March Sadness. It was if Charlottesville was the land that college basketball forgot.

ATLANTA - Georgia Tech upset Clemson and then absorbed a bitter, 64-62 quarterfinals loss to Florida State Friday, but the Yellow Jackets could be a major force in the ACC next season. Maybe.

Duke slips past Maryland

ATLANTA - Maryland possibly proved its worth for the NCAA tournament field, but the Terps did not have enough energy down the stretch Saturday night to make yesterday’s ACC tournament finals. Third-seeded Duke held off the Terps, completing a three-game sweep this season. The Blue Devils (27-6) ended seventh seeded Maryland’s run here Saturday in the second ACC tournament semifinal, 67-61.
