The postseason honors continue for Halifax County High School stalwart Andrew Abbott, as the Comet pitcher earned Virginia High School League 5A player of the year honors.

Abbott earned first team all-state honors as a pitcher and second team all-state honors in 5A as an outfielder.

Clay Lloyd also earned first team all-state honors as a catcher. The Comet standout provided valuable leadership in Halifax’s deep postseason run.

The Virginia High School League 2017 Group 5A All-State baseball team has been selected. Abbott was named the 5A player of the year and Briar Woods head coach Jason Miller was selected the 5A Coach of the Year after, Miller’s Falcons won the 5A state title with a 5-4 win in 14 innings over Halifax County.

Fourteen individuals were selected to the all-state squad, which includes three pitchers, one catcher, four infielders by position, four outfielders, one DH and one utility player. Only first-team all-region selections are eligible for selection to the All-State team.

Each All-State selection committee is composed of eight baseball coaches (four from each Region).

Each Group has its own committee.
