Babe Ruth All-Stars go 4-1 in state tournament play

SoVaNow.com / July 17, 2019
The 13-15-year-old South Hill Babe Ruth All-Stars are 4-1 in the Virginia State Tournament being played this week at Bancroft Field in Arlington.

The South Hill club faced the Arlington All-Stars in the opening round on Thursday after a prolonged rain delay and won 11-7.

On Friday, the local All-Stars took on Greater Loudoun County and won 11-1 in a game ended in the sixth inning thanks to the 10-run mercy rule.

With that victory, the South Hill team earned a day off from the tournament as they were not scheduled to play again until Sunday.

On Sunday, South Hill faced off against the Gloucester All-Stars. After falling behind 2-0, the locals staged a late rally for the win. Logan Harrup got it started in the third inning with a single run for South Hill. South Hill then scored four runs in the fifth and that was more than enough for the win.

Trey Mitchell, J.L. Temple, Alex Townsend and Tyler Turman scored runs for South Hill and the team held Gloucester scoreless for the rest of the game. Harrup, Mitchell and Temple added a run apiece in the seventh, and South Hill got the victory and moved on to face the host Arlington team.

Arlington has two teams in the tournament. South Hill defeated the Arlington All-Stars, who had won their district tournament to earn their place in the state finals. On Monday, the South Hill club played the second Arlington team who were the tournament hosts. Despite a valiant effort, the local All-Stars lost a nail biter against Arlington, 4-3.

The loss sent South Hill to the loser’s bracket to face Stafford later in the day on Monday. The South Hill kids battled through the heat and humidity of a northern Virginia summer day and defeated Stafford 15-4 to make it into the championship round on Tuesday.

South Hill will get another crack at the host Arlington team and must beat them twice to win the double elimination tournament. Game one will be played at 10:00 a.m. and the second game (if needed) will follow at noon.
