Baron girls dominate Bruunswick with three-game sweep / September 08, 2021
Bluestone’s Emma Newcomb served 25 straight points in the second set to lead the Barons girls volleyball team to the 3-0 win over Brunswick High School last week in Lawrenceville.

Newcomb, one of two seniors on the team, recorded 20 service points on aces along with a dig and four assists in the win. Bluestone dominated the match with scores of 25-2, 25-0 and 25-6.

Coach Darlynn Oxendine said the team “really stepped up” to control the action.

“Varsity looked good considering we have not seen each other in a while,” Oxendine said. “Glad to be back on the court.”

Bluestone's other senior, Trista Newcomb, recorded 13 serve aces and a kill. Elena Bailey, Kailey Gill and Deanna Glass totaled six, four and two aces, respectively. Bluestone had eight kills during the match — two each by Grace Newcomb and Tania Harris.

Bluestone is now 2-0, 0-0 JRD. The team has back-to-back matches this week.

On Wednesday the girls travel to Emporia to play Greensville County High School. Thursday marks the opening of James River District competition as the team has a road match at Amelia County High School.

The junior Lady Barons didn’t compete last week due to Brunswick not having a JV team. The JVs have a record of 1-3, 0-0 JRD and will be back in action this week along with the varsity.
