Baron girls trounce GW-Danville, stay unbeaten / September 29, 2021

The Bluestone varsity volleyball team traveled to Danville on Monday night to take on non-district opponent George Washington and won the match, 3-0.

Bluestone, a 2A program, was dominant in holding the 4A GW-Danville Eagles to single digits in all three games, 25-8, 25-7 and 25-9. Bluestone improved to 8-0, 5-0 JRD.

Emma Newcomb had 15 serve aces and 10 kills. Newcomb also had a triple-double and scored 25 straight set points during the team’s recent wins over Central Lunenburg and Randolph-Henry.

Teammate Grace Newcomb added seven aces and seven assists. Skyla King and Lillie Puryear combined for 17 digs.

Baron coach Darlynn Oxendine said the Monday match was a nice non-district win after a fairly long trip to Danville to take on the Eagles.

“We had a pretty long ride tonight — one hour and 11 minutes, but the girls took care of business,” Oxendine noted.

Bluestone 3, Central Lunenburg 0

Emma Newcomb had a triple-double on the night with 17 assists and kills and 13 digs as Bluestone defeated a very pesky Lunenburg squad in Victoria last Thursday, 25-16, 25-12 and 25-22.

Grace Newcomb added a double-double, posting 16 assists and 13 kills. Trista Newcomb and Lillie Puryear had 15 and 14 digs, respectively. Brooke Conwell contributed five digs.

Emma Newcomb served up all 25 points in the game two shutout victory, 25-0, as Bluestone went on thrash R-H in three games. Scores in sets one and three were 25-13, both times.

Newcomb had 21 serve aces, eight digs, 13 assists, seven kills and a block to pace all players.

“Varsity showed their power and remain undefeated,” Oxendine stated. “Emma Newcomb served 25 straight points in game two; third of the season.”

Bluestone welcomed Cumberland yesterday [Tuesday] and travels to Nottoway on Thursday.
