Barons boys soccer eliminated from postseason / May 29, 2019

Bluestone played a tough game with Goochland in the Region 2A boys soccer quarterfinal but came away with the 6-2 loss, thus eliminating the Barons from the tournament.

Bluestone defeated the Greensville Eagles, out of the Tri-Rivers District, 8-2 to advance to the quarterfinal round. The team finished its regular season in fourth place in the James River District with a record of 10-5-1.

Still, to show what this team was made of, Bluestone had five players named to JRD All-District teams. Seniors Cooper Carter (forward), Gabe Giammatteo (midfield), and Dale Sturdifen (defender) took first team honors as did junior Daniel Presgraves (keeper). Senior Evan Newton made the JRD second team at the midfield position.

Barons fall to

Goochland 6-2

In the third minute Goochland scored a penalty kick. In the 11th minute Kyleigh Brown scored on an assist from Evan Newton to knot the score at 1-1. Goochland scored in the 23rd minute to lead 2-1 going to the half.

Goochland kept up the pressure in the second half and posted another goal five-minutes in. The Bulldogs scored again in the seventh minute and 18th minute, to pull ahead 5-1.

Bluestone kept at it and in the 37th minute Carter scored on a corner kick from Newton. Goochland scored the final goal of the game in the 39th minute.

Barons defeat

Greensville Eagles 8-2

Bluestone met Greensville in the first round of regional play with very good control of the game in the 8-2 win.

Bluestone possessed the ball 75 percent of the time. The Barons’ defense was tough, allowing only eight shots. Daniel Presgraves had three saves in goal.

The defense passed the ball well to the midfield. Bluestone’s midfield controlled the game with passes and field awareness. The midfield players played the ball forward to create scoring opportunities for the front players.

In the eighth minute Cooper Carter scored the first goal of the game. In the 20th minute Kyleigh Brown sent a pass to Carter who put the ball in the goal. Greensville fought back and scored in the 30th minute. In the 35th minute Carter scored his third goal of the game with another assist from Brown. Bluestone was up 3-1 at the half.

Bluestone didn’t let up in the second half. In the third minute Chris Bagbey scored. In the 16th minute Evan Newton scored a penalty kick. In the 21st minute Seth Newton scored on a penalty kick. In the 23rd minute Wesley Castle found the goal. Greensville scored in the 32nd minute. In the 40th minute Bluestone’s Pedro Trejo-Garcia scored on the final play of the game. Final score was 8-2 in favor of Bluestone.
