Barons break losing streak with victory over Buckingham

On Tuesday, April 10 the Barons varsity baseball team ended their streak of tough losses with a 13-9 win against Buckingham.

The varsity boys brought their bats and scored three runs in the first inning, with the majority of the runs (six) scored in the top of the fifth inning with two outs. The offense was led by Scott Nutter, Nate Newcomb and Josh Hite, each with doubles.

The RBI parade was led by Scott Nutter with four runs driven in, Noah Forbes with three RBIs, and Nate Newcomb, Josh Hite and Larry Bullock who each collected one RBI.

Buckingham scored mostly in the first and fifth innings, however, they were unsuccessful in squashing the Barons’ bats.

The Barons’ defense was led by the exceptional pitching of Scott Nutter, who threw into the seventh inning before being relieved by Landon Allgood.

Allgood was able to retire the three batters he faced with two groundouts and a strikeout.

Bluestone 6, 
Cumberland 5

The Bluestone varsity boys kept their winning streak going at home, with a 6-5 win against Cumberland on Thursday, April 12.

Cumberland jumped on the Barons’ pitching in the first inning, scoring two earned runs. The Barons answered back with three earned runs, led with an RBI triple by Josh Hite that scored Scott Nutter, who reached base with a base on balls.

The remaining RBIs in the first inning came on a groundout by Noah Forbes that scored Josh Hite, and an RBI double by Nate Newcomb, scoring Brendan King who reached base with a base on balls.

Defensively for Bluestone, starting pitcher, Nate Newcomb (who recently came off the DL) was able to hold the runs down in the second and third inning, before being relieved by Jordan Hill in the fifth inning.

Cumberland scored their remaining runs with two earned runs in the fourth and one unearned run in the fifth inning. The Barons didn’t score again until the fifth inning, with a single by Josh Hite, who came home due to an overthrow, resulting in a three-base error.

By the seventh inning, the Barons tied the score with a groundout by Noah Forbes, scoring Josh Hite. The game went into the eighth inning, where the Barons were able to hold off Cumberland from scoring any further runs.

The Barons clinched the game in the bottom of the eighth with a walk-off RBI by Landon Allgood, scoring Joseph Walker.

Jordan Hill was the winning pitcher.

Greensville 5, 
Bluestone 1

The Bluestone varsity baseball team ended their four-game week with an unfortunate 5-1 loss against Greensville on Friday, April 13.

Greensville took the lead in the beginning of the game, scoring three earned and one unearned run in the initial two innings. The last run wasn’t scored until the sixth inning.

The Barons struggled defensively and offensively, putting up the only run in the top of the fifth inning on a single by Scott Nutter, scoring Larry Bullock.
