There are eight teams left in the Class 5 state baseball tournament, including both reigning state champion Briar Woods and runner-up Halifax County.

The Comets are on the road Tuesday in an elimination game at Freedom-South Riding. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. The winner moves on to the state semifinals, while the loser is finished for the season.

The state baseball pairings look like this for the Tuesday evening lineup:

Region B champion Deep Run is hosting region A runner-up Maury; region A champion Menchville is hosting region B runner-up Prince George; region C champion Freedom-South Riding welcomes region D runner-up Halifax and region D champion Potomac is hosting region C runner-up and defending state champion Briar Woods.

The state semifinals are set for Friday, with action at Glen Allen. The semifinals are set for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The state finals are Saturday, at Deep Run High School, at 10 a.m.

The season is on the line for Halifax County High School varsity softball Tuesday.

The Comets will meet Tuscarora in Loudoun County at 6 p.m. in the state tournament quarterfinals of Class 5..

Halifax has made the final elite eight in Class 5. There are four games Tuesday, Region B champion Lee-Davis hosting Region A runner-up Kempsville; Region A champion Kecoughtan hosting region B runner-up Prince George, Tuscarora, region C champion, hosting the Region D runner-up Comets; and Region D champion Brooke Point hosting region C runner-up Freedom-South Riding.

The Class 5 state semifinals are Friday, with games at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Glen Allen High School.

The state finals are Saturday at 10 a.m.
