Bluestone boys suffer 53-51 loss on road to Eagles / January 08, 2020

The Bluestone varsity basketball team got off to a slow start on Friday night and, combined with a weak night at the foul line, fell to district rival Prince Edward 53-51 in Farmville.

Bluestone dropped the first period to the Eagles 12-8. The Barons were four-of-13 from the foul line for the night.

The Barons were led for the fifth straight game by forward Mike Harris, who headed all players with 24 points. Nic Abernathy, Bluestone’s junior shooting forward, added 15 points.

Harris scored eight points in the second period as Bluestone outpaced PE in the stanza, 16-13. The Barons were down by one at halftime, 25-24.

Both teams posted 15 points in the third quarter. Harris had a big period, knocking down 10 points. Da’Trione Shearin collected five.

The Eagles maintained the lead at 40-39 entering the final period. PE won the fourth quarter 13-12.

Abernathy had nine points during this time. Bluestone shot 16-of-44 from deuce land and was five-of-21 on three pointers.

The boys traveled to Nottoway last night (Tuesday) and complete the week at home against Goochland. Both games are much-needed win situations as the Barons’ regular season kicks into full gear. Bluestone is ranked eighth in a nine-team district with an overall record of 4-7, 2-4 JRD.

JV basketball plays well, gets win over PE 50-45

The Bluestone Barons jayvee basketball team had a solid game against the Eagles on Friday and came away with the 50-45 win.

The junior Barons are 5-2, 5-1 and currently hold third place in the James River District.

Edward “EJ” Jones headed Bluestone and all players with 16 points on the night. Teammates Garrett Allgood and S’Mario Pettus had 12 and 10 points, respectively. Akim Simmons hit for seven.

Bluestone fell behind 15-11 at the end of the first period. Each team posted eight points in the second, with PE leading 23-19 at halftime.

Jones had eight first half points. Hicks with eight points and Smith with seven led the Eagles.

The Barons won the third frame, 17-14. Allgood and Pettus had six points apiece in the period. Jones chipped in four points.

The productive quarter pulled the Barons back to within one point, 37-36, going into the final period.

Allgood led a 14-8 final period for Bluestone, scoring five points and helping to secure the 50-45 victory.
