SoVaNow.com / October 17, 2012
The Bluestone varsity girls volleyball team split a pair of district matches last week, beating Cumberland in a tightly-fought five game set but losing to Goochland in three straight games.

The Lady Barons hosted Goochland on Monday and lost 13-25, 19-25, 23-25. On Wednesday the girls traveled to Cumberland where they battled to victory over the Lady Dukes in five games, 25-12, 25-23, 24-26, 21-25, 15-12.

The Baron girls had an 8-2 record in James River District action through the end of the week. This week they were slated to continue district play with a Monday game against Amelia and a Wednesday matchup at home with Central of Lunenburg.

In their Monday match against Goochland, the girls were led by Kelsey Thornton with seven kills, Jessi Covington with 68 assists and Carmen Sturdifen with 13 digs and Anahi Trujillo with nine digs. Breanna Wade also made a key contribution with six digs, and Erin Puryear and Kelsey Pruett were a perfect 100 percent on their serve attempts.

On Wednesday, the Lady Barons got off to a strong start against Cumberland, taking the first game handily, 25-12, but each game afterwards was a struggle. After going up 2-0 with a 25-23 win in the second game, Bluestone dropped the next two games as Cumberland came roaring back. The fifth and deciding game went the Lady Barons’ way, 15-12.

Jessi Covington was all over the floor with 64 assists, and Kelsey Thornton converted 82 percent of her attacks at the net. Carmen Sturdifen, Anahi Trujillo and Bridget Bass had strong games, with 13, 11 and 9 digs respectively, and behind the service line Erin Puryear scored four aces and Bridget Bass had one.
