Bluestone girls topple Central, lose to PV, battle Appomattox

SoVaNow.com / October 23, 2013

The Bluestone Lady Barons faced a busy schedule last week as the varsity volleyball girls played three games and went one-for-two.

The Lady Barons opened play last Tuesday with a four-game match with Central of Lunenburg, prevailing 3-1. Central played the Barons extremely close and provided some stiff competition but Bluestone went on to win the match with scores of 25-18, 25-20, 24-26 and 25-14.

Keri Lenhart and Kelsey Thornton had seven aces and three aces, respectively. Thornton also had nine kills in the match. The team totaled 85 assists in the match.

On Wednesday, the Barons traveled to Park View and lost in three straight games. Scores from the match were 15-25, 9-25 and 18-25.

The Lady Barons played a valiant game but mistakes at inopportune times helped lead to the loss. Evie Gordon set the ball for 67 assists in the match.

The Lady Barons finished up the week at Appomattox. The match went five games before a winner was declared.

The Barons won the first two games, 25-22 and 25-20. But Appomattox settled in and fought back to claim the next three games and the match.

The scores for Appomattox were 25-14 and 25-21 in games three and four. Appomattox won the game-five tiebreaker, 17-15.

Although the Lady Barons lost, several players had stellar games — one being Gordon, who recorded 107 assists in the match. Lenhart posted 10 kills and Thornton followed with eight kills.

Jayvees fare better

The JV Lady Barons also played three games during the week and were able to pull out two victories.

The Bluestone jayvees downed Central and Appomattox, but lost to Park View.

Against Central, the lady JVs lost the first game 25-23. They came back to claim games two and three, 25-17 and 15-9.

Heather Wilson totaled 64 assists for the match. Wilson also attempted five kills and scored all five.

The Park View game was over in pretty short order as the junior Lady Barons were defeated in two quick games, 25-11 and 25-9.

Bouncing back from the Wednesday loss, the jayvees needed three games to beat Appomattox. The Barons lost game one by a score of 25-17 but came back to claim games two and three.

Wilson had seven aces in the match. Laurine Jordan and Katelyn Tilman had six kills each to aid the Bluestone cause.
