Bluestone handles Nottoway in 3-1 volleyball win / September 19, 2018

The Bluestone girls volleyball team defeated Nottoway 3-1 last week to improve to 5-1 in the James River District. Bluestone is now tied for first in the district.

The team was led by Emma Newcomb, who recorded 24 digs, 10 assists, 11 kills, and one block. Hite Jones had 23 assists.

The first game was back-and-forth with Bluestone battling back to take the win, 28-26. In game two, Nottoway scored the 17-25 win.

Bluestone kept its focus and won 25-16 and 25-15 in the next two games. Ashlyn Knott posted 21 kills on the night.

Coach Darlynn Oxendine said the girls play their best when they are happy. And she encourages that attitude among her players.

“We just played a team that beat Goochland, and Goochland has not been beaten in many, many years,” Oxendine said. “And I can honestly say that our girls play good when they are happy and they were happy. The one game they lost, they dropped their head. But once they pulled their heads back up again they played consistent, good volleyball.”

Bluestone was scheduled to play Buckingham at home on Tuesday but the game was moved to Wednesday due to the tornadoes experienced in Mecklenburg and areas north of the county on Monday. Jayvee games begin at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity match following.
