Bluestone jayvees beat Lunenburg, Goochland

SoVaNow.com / October 02, 2019

The jayvee Lady Barons stirred up the district standings last week by besting Central-Lunenburg in a rematch at home on Thursday and getting an upset win over Goochland last Tuesday to move to 7-2 in the James River District and 8-2 overall.

The two victories put the team in a dead heat with Buckingham and Goochland for second place in the JRD as each of those teams also have 7-2, 8-2 records. Central-Lunenburg holds the top spot in the district at 8-3.

All this is happening after the Lady Barons were in sixth place just a few weeks back, before moving up to fourth place in the last two weeks of JRD action.

Bluestone defeated Central-Lunenburg in two sets, 25-18 and 25-19. Bluestone lost its season opener against Central-Lunenburg in Victoria on Aug. 27 by the same match score, 0-2.

The Lady Barons had 11 serve aces in the Lunenburg match. Lillie Puryear had double-digit digs in the match with 10. Grace Newcomb and Kailey Gill combined for 10 assists, six and four, respectively. The team had 14 kills on some pretty aggressive play.

Scores in the Goochland win were 25-23 (B), 24-26 (G) and 15-12 (B), as the teams met for the first time this season.

Bluestone really challenged Goochland to keep the volley alive grinding out 92 digs in the win. Lillie Puryear (22), Amelia Whittington (18), Cassidy Newcomb (17), Grace Newcomb (15), and Skyla King with 13 digs led the way.

Bluestone had 13 serve aces in the game. G. Newcomb and Kailey Gill set the pace on assists with 15, eight and seven, in that order.

Bluestone plays Halifax County today in a home match. The JV Lady Barons won their previous match over the Lady Comets 2-0. The girls meet Buckingham on Thursday in a road contest — the team took down Buckingham in a previous match in Skipwith, 2-0.
