Following this week’s preseason scrimmages, Bluestone spring sports teams will begin James River District competition starting Monday.

Baron softball and girls and boys soccer will hold scrimmages this week. Softball was scheduled to scrimmage Park View Tuesday.

Boys varsity soccer will hold two scrimmages during the week. The first was held Tuesday versus Brunswick. The team closes out the week hosting Park View today.

On tap for next week, Bluestone varsity soccer will host Buckingham High School on Monday for a 6 p.m. match.

On Tuesday, March 17 both varsity softball and baseball will be at Buckingham. Barons sports winds up the week on Thursday with baseball and softball at Greensville County High School in Emporia.

The girls soccer team will host Arcadia High School in a non-district matchup on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The varsity boys welcome JRD opponent Amelia following the girls’ game.

There have also been coaching changes in the baseball and soccer programs. Longtime Barons varsity boys soccer coach Thomas Wells will take over head coaching duties for the girls team this season. The team’s previous coach, Marty Bowlin, left the position at the end of last season.

Bluestone alumnus Roger Clark — who has coached in various recreation and travel leagues and is a VHSL official — will take over coaching duties for the boys soccer program.

With Barons baseball, first-year head coach Dequan Smith will lead the team. Also a Bluestone alumnus, Smith has coached at the middle and high school levels in various sports, in particular middle school and varsity baseball.
