Bluestone soccer sweeps Nottoway / May 08, 2019

The Bluestone boys varsity soccer team earned two James River District wins over Nottoway last week but lost a close 2-1 match with Goochland on Monday in Skipwith.

Scores in the Nottoway matches were 6-0 on the road and 4-2 at home. The wins have the Barons knotted with Amelia at 8-5 in the district, tied in fourth place.

The Barons will play Buckingham on the road today and return to face them again in Skipwith tomorrow. The team completes its regular season on May 13 at home against Cumberland. Bluestone won over Cumberland in an 8-0 win on April 10.

The two Buckingham matches will be the first time this season the teams have met. Buckingham sits in third place in the district with a record of 8-3-1. Cumberland is 0-14, in the last spot in the JRD.

Bluestone 4, Nottoway 2

Nottoway started the game of with a goal in the 13th minute on a free kick. Control of the game went back and forth the first half. In the 33rd minute Cooper Carter scored on a free kick. The half ended tied 1-1.

Nottoway started the second half off with a goal in the fourth minute. Bluestone answered right away when Carter sent a corner kick in to Chris Bagbey who put the ball in the goal. Bluestone picked up their intensity and Carter scored in the 12th minute.

The rest of the half was controlled by Bluestone. In the 38th minute Peyton Chavis scored on a pass from Bagbey for the final goal of the game. Bluestone’s defense and midfield played tough allowing only eight shots.

Daniel Presgraves had two saves to keep Nottoway from scoring more than two goals. Final was 4-2 in favor of Bluestone.

Bluestone 6, Nottoway 0

The game started off with Bluestone maintaining possession of the ball. In the 17th minute Cooper Carter scored on a long header from Evan Newton. In the 37th minute Carter scored again with an assist from Ethan Parker.

The half ended with a 2-0 lead for Bluestone. The guys started off the second half controlling the game.

In the ninth minute Gabe Giammatteo sent a pass to Carter who scored again for his third hat trick of the season. In the 14th minute Xavier Sturdifen plowed through Nottoway’s defense to score. In the 17th minute Kyleigh Brown scored on a corner kick from Carter.

In the 16th minute Thomas Overton scored the last goal of the match. Bluestone controlled almost the entire game. Bluestone’s defense only allowed three shots from Nottoway and they kept the ball played forward along with the midfield to create scoring opportunities. It was a well-played game by the team. The final was 6-0 in favor of Bluestone.
