Despite giving their Group AAA rivals a stern test, the Bluestone varsity volleyball girls lost their second game of the season Thursday to Halifax County High School, 25-16, 26-24 and 25-23.

In their season opener last Tuesday, Aug. 31, the Baron girls beat Central of Lunenburg, 25-16, 25-22 and 25-16.

The Bluestone girls, led by seniors Carmen Sturdifen and Amy Hamlett, are off to a strong start under head coach Darlynne Oxendine. After their match with Halifax, Comet coach Steve Mattox came away impressed. “Bluestone is a good team and this is a nice win,” he said.

Following the game with the Comets, Hamlett ranked as the team’s statistical leader, setting the pace as the Lady Barons’ most efficient server and mid-court presence.

Carmen Sturdifen, meantime, has emerged as force at the net, leading the team in blocks and second behind only Morgan Pruett in kills.

Also, Jasmine Sturdifen is off to a strong start, ranking among the team’s top three in five categories — digs, serving and receiving, sets, kills and blocks. Elizabeth Nelson ranks first in kills and is among Bluestone’s top three players in serving efficiency, sets and blocks.

Taylor Moore leads the pack in serving efficiency and the number of aces scored.

Amy Hamlett, Jasmine Sturdifen and Elizabeth Nelson are captains of this year’s team.

The Lady Barons were scheduled to host Central of Lunenburg Tuesday in a reprise of their season opener, and they play again Thursday at home against Randolph-Henry.
