Bluestone spikers topple Amelia 3-0 / September 15, 2021

The Bluestone varsity and jayvee volleyball teams won their James River District openers last week, with the varsity topping Amelia in a 3-0 shutout, 25-17, 25-13 and 25-11.

The win raises the Lady Barons’ season record to 3-0, 1-0 JRD. The varsity girls were scheduled to host Buckingham yesterday and Prince Edward on Thursday.

Coach Darlynn Oxendine said, “we played some good ball.”

Senior Emma Newcomb had 11 kills, nine assists, along with four aces. Grace Newcomb added 10 assists and four aces.

Skyla King and Trista Newcomb consistently played above the net and recorded several blocks.

In addition, King had 13 digs, one assist, four kills and two serve aces.

The team’s newest member, Brooke Conwell, played a solid match with 15 digs, six serve aces, an assist and a kill. Elena Bailey, Deonna Glass, and Kailey Gill provided assists, kills and digs to aid in the win.

Junior Lady Barons begin district play with 2-0 win

The jayvees held their own on the road last week, taking down Amelia 25-21 in each of the two sets.

The team combined for 53 digs to keep volleys alive. Amelia Whittington had eight digs, three aces, five assists, and one kill.

Julie King had 13 digs, three aces and two kills. Ashlyn Wilbourne contributed 11 digs, two assists, and three kills. Jansyn King and Danella Davis combined for 16 digs and Naimira Mangum, Jocelyn Ashworth and Grace Castle added five.

The jayvees’ record is 2-0, 1-0 JRD entering play this week. Jayvee competition starts at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity match following.
