Bluestone volleyball keeps up spotless season

The Bluestone High School varsity volleyball team recorded two wins during the past week to move to 5-0 on the season, 2-0 in James River District play.

On Monday night the girls met Brunswick on their home court in Skipwith, winning the match in three games, 25-5, 25-3 and 25-0.

In game three senior Emma Newcomb delivered 25 straight points. Skyla King also had a strong hand on the serve, delivering 12 aces.

Coach Darlynn Oxendine said with the entire varsity squad back in action, the win felt good.

“It felt great to pick up a win tonight with the whole team,” Oxendine said. “We got off to a fast start serving to take the first game.”

Bluestone went with a different unit the second game and used another unit in set three, allowing everyone to get in on the action.

Bluestone has two more matches scheduled this week. The girls traveled to Randolph-Henry last night (Tuesday) and play at Central Lunenburg High School on Thursday.

Lady Barons defeat Prince Edward 3-0

Bluestone played its first JRD match of the season last Thursday at home, beating Prince Edward 25-6, 25-11 and 25-15.

Grace Newcomb recorded 10 assists and 11 kills and Emma Newcomb had 23 assists and 10 kills, giving both girls double-doubles on the night.

Skyla King and Elena Bailey combined for 36 digs. Brooke Conwell, Cassidy Newcomb and Lillie Puryear each had big contributions throughout the match.

“The varsity Lady Barons looked good tonight,” said Oxendine of the PE win. ”Power volleyball equals a win. We served well, we hit well, and we had fun.”
