Bluestone volleyball looking good in preseason competition

SoVaNow.com / August 28, 2019

The Bluestone varsity volleyball team held its only preseason scrimmage game on Thursday before regular James River District play begins this week. In the exhibition tune-up in Danville, the Baron girls dominated George Washington in three straight sets, 25-5, 25-3, 25-18.

Sophomore Emma Newcomb had a strong game for the Lady Barons collecting 12 aces, 11 digs, seven kills, and 11 assists. Newcomb seems to be picking up right from where she left off last season – a freshman year where she earned a spot on the JRD All-District first team.

Ashlyn Knott, 2018 JRD Volleyball Player of the Year, also had a great outing. Knott recorded six aces, six digs, and 13 Kills.

Hite Jones had 11 assists in the win. Tori Rowe contributed 13 digs.

Bluestone played Central Lunenburg on Tuesday night to begin JRD regular season action. The girls will close out the week on the road at Halifax County on Thursday. Bluestone’s first home match is scheduled for Sept. 3 when the team competes against Buckingham.

Barons coach Darlynn Oxendine said the varsity team looked good in the win over GW-Danville.

Skyla King, Maddy Smith, Jamison Dahl and Cassidy Newcomb all had productive sets in contribution to the Lady Barons’ win. The team has two matches on schedule for the week; on Tuesday the girls travel to Victoria to play Central Lunenburg.
