Bluestone volleyball takes road losses at Cumberland, Goochland / September 26, 2018

The Bluestone varsity volleyball team has fallen to fourth place in the James River District, losing their last two matches to Cumberland (3-3 JRD) and Goochland (5-1 JRD). Bluestone entered last week in the No. 1 position.

Bluestone (5-3, 4-3 JRD) showed grit in Cumberland match, which went five games. The Barons won game one 25-13, lost games two 21-25 and three 26-28, and then won 25-18. That set up a decisive game five, which Cumberland took 15-11. Bluestone committed an uncharacteristic 16 serving errors and 15 attacking errors in the match, which is hard to overcome from no matter how well the Barons played in other aspects of the game.

Ashlyn Knott and Emma Newcomb led the Barons on offense. Knott posted 18 kills and 4 aces. Newcomb blasted the Lady Dukes for 11 kills, 7 aces and 22 assists.

Bluestone also worked to keep the volleys alive with Erin Strider having 21 digs, Tori Rowe 18 digs and Trista Newcomb 12 digs.

Baron stats vs. Cumberland:

Ashlyn Knott -18 kills, 10 digs, 4 aces, 2 blocks

Emma Newcomb -14 digs, 22 assists, 11 kills, 7 aces

Erin Strider - 21 digs, 3 kills, 1 assist, 4 aces

Tori Rowe - 18 digs, 7 kills, 2 aces, 1 assist

Hite Jones - 8 digs, 2 aces, 2 kills

Trista Newcomb -12 digs, 1 kill, 1 ace

Annelise Bailey - 4 digs

Lilah Turner - 1 kill

The Barons traveled to Goochland on Monday night and gave their hosts all they could handle but exited the match after losing three straight games. Scores were 21-25, 24-26 and 25-27.

E. Newcomb, whose game is much more mature than her freshman status, had 7 digs, 14 kills, one ace and 18 assists. Hite Jones, Bluestone’s setter, had 16 assists, one ace and four kills in the match.

Knott kept her double-digit kill rate for the season going, spiking 13 on the night. Strider and Rowe combined for 28 digs.

Bluestone will take on the Lady Statesmen of Randolph-Henry (1-5 JRD) on Thursday night. The Barons are 4-0 on their home court.
