Bluestone’s Knott, Newcomb earn All-Region honors

SoVaNow.com / November 20, 2019
Anyone who has had the opportunity to witness Bluestone Lady Barons varsity volleyball action this season will recognize two standouts — Ashlyn Knott and Emma Newcomb.

Their exceptional seasons had already garnered Knott, a senior, first team all-district honors and Newcomb, a sophomore, James River District Player of the Year honors.

Now add one more award for both — Region 2 first-team selections.

Knott, who was the JRD Player of the Year last season, broke records for best receive percentage (81 percent), best dig percentage (88 percent), and best kill percentage (38.7 percent).

Knott owns the records for most serves received (191, in the 2018-2019 season), most kills (368, 2018-2019) and most blocks (75, 2017-2018).

Newcomb set records for most aces (141), best ace percentage (30 percent) and most digs (341). Newcomb also holds the record for most assists, 336, established last season.

Knott and Newcomb helped lead the Lady Barons to a 18-4, 13-3 record, a mark second only to Goochland in the James River District. Goochland, a Class 3 high school, beat Park View last week to advance to the semifinal round of the VHSL State Class 3 volleyball tournament.

Knott and Newcomb led Bluestone to its first-ever region quarterfinal win in the school’s volleyball program history and placed the team in a position to advance to the Class 2 state tournament before they fell to King William in the region semifinal round.
