By the numbers, Comets had successful season

The Halifax County High School varsity football team finished its season 7-3 and third in the Piedmont District at 4-2.

For the season, the Comets scored 346 points to its opponents 258. The Comets’ two losses, GW-Danville 34-16 and Bassett, 61-14 were games where the Comets saw the largest point spreads.

The Comets finished with 3,481 yards of offense, rushing for 2,255 yards and 29 touchdowns. The Comets ran the ball 346 times for an average of 6.52 yards per touch.

The Comets passed for 1,226 yards with Dakii Chandler handling quarterback duties most of the season. He missed the second half of the GW game and the following game with Patrick County. Josh Miller filled in during his absence.

Comets quarterbacks completed 70 of 148 attempts for a 47.30 pass percentage, good for 15 touchdowns.

Comets coach Rob Senseney said the Comets had several players - D. Chandler, Mikyler Smalls (LB, RB), Kanya Caddle (DB, WR), Qualik Tucker (S, WR), Josh Miller, Zac Carter, Semaj Jeffreys (DB, WR) - that consistently played above average games the entire season.

Chandler threw for 1,081 yards of the team’s 1,226 total. He was 61 of 135 for a 45.19 completion average. He tossed 14 touchdowns with three interceptions.

Chandler ran for 386 yards on 41 carries scoring four touchdowns.

In the backfield Smalls had 203 touches, running for 1,241 yards. Smalls, with only one fumble, scored 14 touchdowns.

Miller rushed 85 times for 532 yards and nine touchdowns.

Caddle was a very strong presence for the Comets, whether blocking for a teammate or on his route. He had 21 catches, for 509 yards and nine touchdowns.

From his safety position Tucker caused two-forced fumbles, had two interceptions and recorded 65 tackles.

Carter notched 75 tackles, 12 being sacks. Carter recovered two fumbles one returned for a TD.

Jeffreys had 40 tackles and three interceptions, one of which he returned for a TD.
