Visitors from Danville mount rally for 15-12 win

Capping the season with victory over SHS / February 14, 2018
The Dragon varsity faced off against the Southampton Indians Friday night at PVHS in the final regular season game. The game, played after being postponed due to bad weather, had no playoff implications but both teams wanted the win to build momentum going into the postseason.

The Dragons got double-double nights from Charlzae Holmes and Demetrious Bugg to defeat the Indians 69-54 in a fast-paced game for both teams. Holmes had 23 points and Bugg added 12 to lead the Dragon effort. DeAndre Miles also cracked double figures in scoring for Park View with 14 points.

The Dragons jumped out to a 22-10 lead in the first quarter and staved off a Southampton rally in the second quarter to go into halftime leading 36-27. The Indians continued to claw their way back into contention in the third quarter, outscoring their hosts 16-13 to cut the lead to 49-43 going into the fourth.

Team basketball was the decisive factor in the fourth for the Dragons. It was almost as if they developed telepathy as their passes were on the mark, rebounders were in the correct position and everything just came together. A balanced scoring attack was led by Bugg, who got six in the stanza to finish with 12 points and 11 rebounds on the night. He added 2 assists as well. D. Miles hit for five of his 14 points in the fourth and got eight rebounds in the game just missing out on a double double of his own. Holmes had four points in the frame to finish with 23 points, 10 rebounds and an assist to finish out his stellar senior regular season with his double double.

Afterwards Coach Danny Watkins repeated a familiar mantra: Team Basketball. “We worked on it yesterday in practice and we were really glad to get back to practicing,” he said. “When you go game, game, game without a chance to practice and correct and focus on the things that really got us here, what got us on that run, throughout the season … get back to the basics.”

“I’m real proud of them [the players] tonight, they really responded against a tough team,” concluded Watkins.
