Halifax County High School boys’ tennis advanced in Piedmont District semifinals action against Patrick County, 5-0, on Thursday.

Halifax will now play for the district title today.

“The guys came up big again today. We were worried that they may put a little pressure on themselves with it being a tourney matchup, but they handled themselves well, even in situations where they fell behind. My hats off to the entire team for a job well done,” said Comet coach David Riddle.

“Monday’s contest in the finals will be the first time that we have played in a team tournament for district or conference in the past few years since they stopped having it. We were able to get a runner up spot in Conference 16 a few years back and had a few decent showings in the old Western Valley District years back, but we haven’t been able to get that team championship. It would be huge for this program to be able to win that. The guys have seemed to be focused and determined ever since they knew we were playing this format so hopefully that will pay off on Monday and help us carry some momentum into regionals,” said Riddle.
