Comet boys fall short in tennis regionals

SoVaNow.com / June 04, 2018
Halifax County High School boys’ tennis fell short in last week’s Region A tennis tournament.

“We knew going into today that both mentally and physically we had some obstacles to face. Both matchups were against the same people that these guys lost to last Tuesday,” said coach David Riddle.

“While the score wasn’t as close in the singles match as it was between them last week, Jacob actually played a solid match. Many of the games went to deuce, some multiple times. Yoder was just placing his shots very well and we just couldn’t take care of our opportunities.

“Jacob and Gordon came out on fire in the doubles match. They looked much better than they did last week, and seemed to be in control. They built up a 5-3 lead and were looking really confident. Then Harrisonburg caught a few breaks and took control. We couldn’t gain any momentum after dropping a close first set.

“Still, my hats off to both of these guys. You always hate to see a Senior play their last match, and unfortunately we had to deal with that with both of them today. But they finished off their careers with the same class and dignity that both have carried through their great careers with us. They will be missed tremendously next year.

“This was a great year for us, both on the team and individual level. We have a ton of experience coming back next year and will look to carry on with our recent success,” said Riddle.

Singles

Toby Yoder (Harrisonburg) def Jacob Wenzel (HC) 6-2, 6-2

Doubles

Yoder/Yoder (H’burg) def Wenzel/Gordon Taylor (HC) 7-5, 6-1
