Comet girls hold off GW 53-42 / January 27, 2020

Halifax County High School’s Ella Morrison posted 12 points and teammate Dee Dee Jeffress contributed 10 points as the varsity girls basketball team went on to defeat district competitor George Washington 53-42 in Danville on Friday night.

The Comets (13-3, 4-2) are fourth in the Piedmont District rankings beginning this week of upcoming action. Magna Vista, Martinsville and Patrick County hold the top-three spots, respectively.

Halifax opened the game with a solid quarter of play winning the first period 12-9. Morrison had five points resulting from a trey and a basket.

Nyasia Lanier had seven points to lead GW. Lanier drained 28 points to lead all players.

The Comets posted an 18-6 second period. Halifax had seven players score in the frame led by Dezheona Mitchell’s five points. Kayla Townes posted four points during the same time and Halifax was up at the break 30-15.

Returning to the court the Comets offense remained intact. Halifax outpaced their host 14-8 in the third period. Again multiple players led the Comets’ attack.

GW rallied in the closing period outscoring Halifax 19-9 but it would be for naught as Halifax stayed solid for the 53-42 win.

Jayvees trounce GW 42-14

The Comet jayvee girls made quick work on George Washington taking the 42-14 road win on Friday.

Halifax took an 11-2 score to the top of the second period and just never gave GW any opening to get back in the game. The Comets knocked down 16 points in the second period and went to halftime with the 27-5 lead.

Tynia Carrington posted 10 first half points. Teammate Vinique Winn had eight in the half.

Halifax outplayed GW 15-9 over the course of the second half to take the 42-14 victory. Winn led the Comets with 11 points in the game; Carrington was good for 10 points.
