Comet girls lose in region finals, prepare for state tourney

SoVaNow.com / May 30, 2019

Halifax County High School varsity softball lost to Mountain View in Thursday's regional finals in South Boston, 2-0.

The Comets will be on the road Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Class 5 state tournament.

Mountain View took advantage of strong pitching from Jessie Kantor, and the visitors struck early to seize the lead.

Halifax got solid pitching from starter Lauryn Chappell and reliever Madison Barnes. But the Comets also missed opportunities to break the scoring drought.

Katie Cole hit a deep smash in the bottom of the sixth, but the drive stayed in the park. Trinity Martin had beat out a bunt when Cole came to the plate. She seemed to get most of it, but Mountain View leftfielder T. Levesque caught the deep fly.

The visitors got the first run in their first at-bat. Pollock drilled a well-hit double, and later scored on a RBI sacrifice fly.

Mountain View added its second run in the fourth. K. Gayle singled and moved to third after two bunts. F. Preston got her home on an RBI single.

Chappell worked three and a thirds innings, with three strikeouts, two walks, four hits allowed and two earned runs. Barnes had a solid relief stint, working three and two-thirds. She fanned four, several in crucial situations, and allowed two hits. She did not allow any runs.

Halifax had five hits, including a single and a double from Jeri Lynn Tyler. The Comets stranded six runners.

Tyler made a terrific catch of a sinking fly ball in the top of the fourth with the bases loaded for Mountain View, just as Barnes had come into the circle. Barnes then got a fly ball out to right to escape trouble in that inning.

Mountain View stranded eight runners.
