Comet girls lose to Martinsville in PD tournament semifinals / February 20, 2020

The Halifax County High School varsity girls basketball team had a solid 60-25 opening round tourney win over Tunstall Friday but weren’t able to hold that momentum as they fell to Martinsville on Monday 58-48 in the Piedmont District Basketball Tournament.

With the loss the girls now prepare for Region 4D competition which begins on Friday. The Comets will host Salem in Halifax at 5:30 p.m.

Salem, a Class-4 school , competes in the River Ridge District.

In Monday’s loss the teams were knotted at the end of the first period 13-13 and Martinsville led at the break 30-29.

The Bulldogs won the third frame 17-8. Martinsville would edge out Halifax on the scoreboard in the final period and go on to take the ten-point win.

DeMeisha Canada and Dezheona Mitchell headed the game for the Comets with 12-points apiece; Lynia Reed had double-figure scoring with 10 points.
