Comet girls pound Tunstall in tourney opener

The Halifax County High School arsity girls basketball team began Piedmont District tournament competition with a 60-25 win over Tunstall Friday.

The game was close at the end of the first period at 9-8 in favor of Tunstall. But over the course of the second and third periods Halifax would go on a 50-9 blitz to dominate in the victory.

Ella Morrison paced the Comets with 16 points. Dee Dee Jeffress joined Morrison in double figures posting 13.

After starting the game down one, Halifax’s offense came alive in the second period posting 25 points. The Comets knocked down six treys in the second led by Morrison who drilled three – she also had a basket for 11 points in the quarter and 13 in the half.

Jeffress and DeMeisha Canada had six points each in the half. The Comets held Tunstall to five points during the same period and led at the break 33-15.

Halifax returned to the court in the third period and continued to hammer their opponents, posting another 25-point frame. The Comet’s defense limited Tunstall to four points in the third and seven points to close out the game.

Kamyria Giggetts had eight points in the third to head Halifax. Jeffress followed with seven.

Halifax had 12 players score. Tunstall’s Kayleigh Griffith paced her squad with 13 points.

The Comets are 17-5 and advance to round-two action.
