Comet girls slip past Martinsville 2-1 on Senior Night

South Boston News
SoVaNow.com / May 09, 2019
Halifax County High School varsity girls soccer edged Martinsville, 2-1, on Senior Night Tuesday.

This was a very physical game, more like a rugby match than a soccer game.

Ella Morrison scored in the first half, about 15 minutes in the first half. Martinsville came up with a strong shot to tie.

Halifax dominated in the second half, missing multiple opportunities. Summer Lacks finally scored the game-winning goal late on a well-executed rebound.

Halifax improved to 8-7, with one regular season game left. Halifax gets Magna Vista tonight in Ridgeway.

Comet coach Sid Young had several candidates for special recognition.

Leigh Anne McCornick, Maddie Freshour, Kelly Garcia, Kim Cole and Janae Hansen played well on defense.

The midfield stalwarts included Izzie Rosche and Morrison. Wing midfielder Carrie Reaves also played well.

On offense, Mandy Lewis and Lacks had productive efforts.
