SoVaNow.com / September 16, 2021
Halifax County High School girls finished third and boys finished fourth at their cross country meet at Tunstall Tuesday.

The girls took third with a score of 63. Kate Bishop finished seventh.

Lydia Wenzel, Morgan Crenshaw and Mallory Salley also posted points for the Comets.

“Kate Bishop led the girls once again and placed seventh out of 53 runners,” girls coach Michelle Palmore said. “She’s getting stronger every week and becoming more comfortable and competitive in each competition.

“Lydia Wenzel, Morgan Crenshaw and Mallory Salley all finished very strong in the top-20 and shaved some time off of their previous runs

Galileo High School posting 25 points, Tunstall with 55, and Bassett at 92 points were first, second and fourth.

The Comet boys fourth place finish was out of a field of six schools. Ethan Kirkhart and Justin Pool had the best performances on the day for Halifax.

“Ethan Kirkhart and Justin Pool ran well against some tough competition, placing in the top-20,” Palmore said. “They are really pushing themselves, so we are expecting them to be near the top every week in the district.”

This was the second district meet of the season. Palmore and boys coach David Riddle feel like the teams are right where they need to be right now.

“Coach Riddle and I were pleased with the results this week at the meet,” Palmore said. “We are still seeing improvement across the board, so the runners are really setting themselves up for success the second half of the season and that’s exactly what we want.

“The team is looking really good going into our home meet next week at Edmunds Park. We are looking forward to some great competition.”

Boys team placements were: first, Hidden Valley High 35, second, Galileo High School 41, third, Tunstall 73, fourth, Halifax County 110, fifth, Patrick County 125, sixth, George Washington 144.
