Halifax County High School varsity softball has enjoyed a very strong opening effort in what’s expected to be a successful season.

The Comets slipped by Dan River, 6-4, with a late rally fueled by some timely hitting, walks and defensive miscues.

Halifax also had three runs in the first inning. Lauryn Chappell, Katie Cole and Kaitlyn Richardson scored, with Richardson providing a timely hit.

Coach Woody Bane is optimistic.

Bane noted Halifax has three wins over Person County, Tunstall and Dan River.

“We played really well in all three of them, hit the ball well. We had good starting pitching in all three games.”

Raegan Ridgeway pitched five innings and Chappell closed it out against Dan River.

The Comet offense is producing. Bane said the entire lineup is swinging the ball well. Bane also said this team is blessed with very good speed this year.
