Comet spikers take down Park View 3-0

SoVaNow.com / September 02, 2021

The Halifax County High School volleyball team beat Park View on the road Monday in straight sets, 25-16, 25-17, and 25-18.

Coach Sunshine Martin said the win was a good match for her girls and it also brought to light some areas of play the Comets still need to improve in.

“Even though we got the win we have lots of room for improvement,” Martin said. “Service errors were too many.” It’s the one area Martin says where you just can’t give away free points.

Sophomore Emma Payne had a good match. She had 14 points in the first set to help pace the Comets. She finished the night with 11 assists, five aces and four digs.

The Comets totaled 73 digs in the match showing they were playing all-out defense. Kylie Satterfield had 22 digs in the match. “Park View was a good hitting team and brought back a lot of balls that would typically be down,” Martin said.

Halifax’s consistently good play is what finally clinched the match. Martin saying overall she was pleased with the team’s efforts.

“Varsity played well tonight and controlled the ball well,” said Martin. “We put ourselves in a great offensive position by getting off good passes and setters were great at pushing the ball up for attacks.”

Varsity stats: Sarah Watts k, 2AS, 10D; Trinity Martin 4SA, 14D, 4K, 1B; Shamya Hankins 1B, 2K, 5D 1SA; Madison Barnes 1SA, 10D, 1K; Tessy Henderson 5K, 1B, 1D; Emma Payne 5SA, 14 points in first set, 11As, 4D, Kylie Satterfield 22D, 1SA; Kate Jackson 1SA; Jadyn Harlow 2AS, 2SA; Arissa Conner 7D.

Jayvees fall to Park View 2-1

The Comet jayvees fell to Park View 2-1.

Halifax won the first set 26-24. Park View claimed the next two 25-17 and 14-16.

Service errors would contribute to this loss as the girls had 11 throughout the match. Martin said it was one of those nights where the girls just weren’t clicking together.

“Just had an off night,” Martin said. “We struggled to get good passes which in turn made our setters struggle.”

Martin said the girls started out slow and were constantly playing catchup.

Blakely Martin led the team with one assist, three digs, one kill, and one ace. She posted 11 points in the first set.

Erin Satterfield had four kills, Abbey Duffer three. Peyton Irby had seven aces and two kills.

JV stats: Abby Duffer 3K, 2D, 2As; Olivia Seamster 2D, 1SA; Makayla Powell 1K, 1SA, 4D; Blakely Martin 1AS, 3D, 1K, SA; Peyton Irby 7SA, 2K; Erin Satterfield 4K.
