Comet track teams to send athletes to state meet

Halifax County High School will send several performers to the state track meet later this week.

The state track and field meet will be held Friday and Saturday at Boo Williams Sportsplex. Qualifiers are:Malique Wimbush in the long jump and triple jump; Lawson Mayfield in the 55m hurdles; 4 x 200 m relay (Darius Bowman, Tavontae Carden, Lawson Mayfield, Malique Wimbush, Ali Ferrell); Kmayia Moore, girls’ Shot put.

The Halifax County High School track teams finished tenth (girls) and eighth (boys) in regional 5D championship action at Fork Union last Tuesday.

Albemarle won the girls regional title with 111 points, with the Comets earning 156 points.

Potomac claimed the boys regional crown, with 123 points. The Comet boys collected 31 points.

Malique Winbush took second in the regionals in the boys long jump, with an effort of 20-07.00.

Lawson Mayfield took third in the region for Halifax in 8.21 in the 55 meter hurdles.

The Comet boys 4x200 meter relay squad finished third in the region (1:37.89.) This team included Darius Bowman, Malique Winbush, Ali Ferrell and Tavontae Carden.

The boys high jump included a fourth place finish for Dexter Dixon (5-10). Dixon was also fourth in the triple in 40-09.

Herbert Brooks was ninth in the boys shot, in 37-10.50.

Kmayia Moore was fourth in the girls shot, in 33-04.

Christia Wood was fourth in the girls long jump in 15-04.50.

Wood took eighth in the girls 55 meter hurdles in 9.60. Darius Bowman was eighth in the boys 55 meter dash in 6.80.

Tavontae Carden was 12th in the 500-meter dash in 1:17.03. Justice Waller ran 12th in the 1000 meter run (3:09.76).

Ali Ferrell ran tenth in the boys 300 meter dash in 39.38.

Halifax finished ninth in the boys 4x800 meter relay in 10:00.78. (The group included Kelly Featherston, Jeremy Watkins, Chase Powell and Waller.)
