Comet volleyball takes back-to-back losses

SoVaNow.com / April 05, 2021

The Halifax County High School varsity volleyball team will play its final two matches of the regular season at home this week after suffering back-to-back losses to end last week.

Halifax (2-6) lost a Thursday match with Bassett, 3-0. On Friday the girls traveled to Patrick County and fell by the same margin.

Halifax takes on Magna Vista Tuesday and plays its final regular season match on Thursday against Patrick County.

Against Bassett, Halifax had one of its best game efforts of the year. Set scores were 25-10, 25-16, and 25-20.

Tessy Henderson had a big match on the front line posting three blocks, three kills, and being disruptive on defense at the net.

“Tessy Henderson was key on the front row tonight,” coach Sunshine Martin said. “Several players contributed with hits. Overall I was pleased with how we improved in our play.”

Kirsten Wellons play a great net game blocking four shots; Trinity Martin added six kills. Madison Barnes, had four kills, two assists, two aces, and five digs.

Martin has seen improvements during the year and noted even though they couldn’t finish off Bassett, they put themselves in the position to win.

“Improvement happened each set,” Martin said. “Missing four serves in the last set really hurt and could have been a game changer.

“We are consistently improving on the things we are working on in practice. With a shortened season we just don’t have the time to keep things rolling.”

During the condensed season Martin has said one area her girls needed to work on was serves. Serving errors would play a part in both losses, but especially against the Bengals.

Individual Stats: Amanda Duffer 1SA, 2A; Kirsten Wellons 2SA, 3K, 4B 1A; Trinity Martin 1B, 6K, 5DG; Sarah Watts 6A; Arissa Conner 3DG; Madison Barnes 2SA, 5DG, 4K, 2A; Kylie Satterfield 1SA, 8DG; Tessy Henderson 3B, 3K; Emma Payne 1A; Jadyn Harlow 1K.

Patrick 3, Halifax 0

Halifax fell 25-14, 25-15, 25-17 in this game and Martin said the Comets didn’t play anywhere near their potential.

Martin noted if it could go wrong, it did in this matchup. Service errors as well as just having an off night helped seal the fate of this match.

Kylie Satterfield paced the Comets with one assist, eight digs, and a kill.

“Tonight just wasn’t our night,” Martin said. “Being on the road for two long trips back-to-back is tough but we’ve got to not play flat.

“We had a total of eight service errors sprinkled throughout the three games. Our hits were off as well as our passing. We’ve got to regroup and get ready for next week to finish our regular season.”

Individual stats: Duffer 2SA, 2K; Wellons 3K; Martin 1SA, 1B; Watts 1K, 6A; Conner 3DG; Barnes 2SA, 2K; Satterfield 1A, 8DG, 1K; Henderson 1B, 3K; Harlow 1SA.
