Comet wrestlers find positives in recent meets

SoVaNow.com / January 20, 2020
Halifax County High School wrestling lost two dual meets, but there is positive news.

The Comets fell to Patrick County, 48-24 and Bassett 42-21.

“Although the team score doesn’t look like it on paper, this was another solid night for us in contested matches. We went 6-3 in contested matches, and Vicks, Driggs, and Zyon were all able to get wins in both of their wrestled matches. All three had one match out of the two where they were behind and one point and had to come back and get the pin. Cole, Harris, and I have stressed all year the importance of fighting from whistle to whistle and not giving up because of the scoreboard, so to see them fight back and get wins was huge as we get closer to the postseason,” said coach David Riddle.

“Colin Mabe was also able to get two pins in exhibition matches. We aren’t always able to get the eighth graders matches, but they come into practice everyday and work as hard as the rest of the guys so it is great to see them get some mat time.

“We head into the Heritage Duals next weekend and then move into the postseason. We have five wrestlers who have brought their win totals for the season to double digits and six with overall winning records at this point. With a small group that is big. This is a tough group top to bottom that does not quit. We will look to have a strong showing in Lynchburg and carry that over into districts, regionals, and send some people on to state,” said Riddle.
