Comets advance to state golf tournament / October 04, 2018
The Halifax County High School golf team has met its goal of returning to the Class 5A state tournament.

The Comets carded a team score of 345, good for second place in the regionals. Albemarle had the top score of 321 and the Patriots also return.

Massaponax placed third and did not advance with a score of 345.

Mountain View was fourth in the regionals with a 367.

Halifax had solid play from its team. Willoughby Gasperini fired a round of 81, and Will Adbi had an 83. Henry Morrison shot 88 and Nick Carter had a 93.

“Our team goal at the beginning of the year was to return to state tournament and the team accomplished that Tuesday at the regionals,” said coach David Graham.

“It was very close but (Halifax) held on. We had been led by Willoughby Gasperini and Will Abdi all year, and we were led by them again. Willoughby finished fourth in the regionals, earning him first team all regional (honors). Abdi’s score was tied for seventh, earning him second team all regional,” said Graham.

“All players fought to the end, giving it all they had. We knew that second place spot was going to be close as coach (David) Day and I kept our players updated. Henry Morrison has played steady all year and he came through yesterday, finishing strong. Nick Carter capped it off wit a 93 which was big for us because it put us past Massaponax for second place.

“All the players worked very hard doing the practice rounds and offered encouragement to each other,” said Graham.

Halifax is returning to the state tournament for the third year in a row.

Halifax was fourth in the state a year and third two seasons ago.

The tournament will be held on Monday at Magnolia Green in the Richmond.
