Comets blank PH-Ashland to clinch region tournament berth / May 18, 2017
Halifax County High School varsity baseball blanked visiting Patrick Henry-Ashland Wednesday, 3-0, to lock up a Region 5-A berth.

With the win, the Comets will play Orange tonight at 7 p.m. for the Conference 16 championship.

Andrew Abbott worked six innings to earn the victory over PH-Ashland, striking out 11 and walking one.

Abbott stranded seven batters.

PH’s most serious threat came in its half of the sixth inning, with the Comets leading 2-0. PH got two runners in scoring position with no one out, but Abbott got two key strikeouts. Abbott then lost only his third batter to base-on-balls all season, as PH loaded the bases with two out.

Second baseman Tyler Duffer then snared the final out on a sharp liner.

Drew Harlow came on in relief in the PH seventh and set the visitors down, although the Patriots got a two-out single. Harlow fielded the final out to secure the win.

Harlow fanned two in relief.

Abbott allowed six hits, while Harlow yielded one.

The Comets managed only five hits.

Halifax scored single runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings.

Abbott blasted a deep triple in the first, and then courtesy runner Eric Brandon scampered home on a wild pitch.

The Comets padded the lead to 2-0 in their half of the fourth. Tyler Duffer was hit by a pitch, and Holt Powell moved him to second. Drew Harlow reached on a tricky fly that fell in, and Duffer scored on a Brayden Moore sacrifice fly.

Halifax produced an extra run in its half of the sixth.

Clay Lloyd cracked a leadoff single and Duffer later added a stinging RBI double.

SOFTBALL GOES TO THIRD PLACE GAME: Comet varsity softball dropped a 4-0 decision at Atlee Wednesday. The Comets will now play in the conference third place game, with a regional berth on the line.
