Comets boys, girls, sweep swim meet against Bassett

Halifax County High School swimming swept both ends of a meet Wednesday against Bassett.

The boys won, 56-39, and the Comet girls also prevailed, 64-42.

“This was our first one-on-one meet against a really good team. I thought we competed well and did well as a team. Our times were good enough to outscore them, but I think we can do much better. We had to many people gain time last night. It was a back and forth points race till the 200 free relay, then we started to command a lead and maintained,” said Comet coach Shawn Torian.

The Comet boys 200 meter medley relay team won in 2:14.68. Team members are Jackson Dunavant, Jake Carr, Shea Carey and Ashton Burton.

The Comet girls also won over that same distance in 2:43.44. Team members are Maddie Freshour, Lydia Wenzel, Maci Henderson and Zoe Talley.

Joe Smiley prevailed in the boys 200 meter free in 2:32.44. Abby Dunn also won that same event for the Comet girls with a time of 3:05.80. M. Henderson won the girls 200 IM, in 3:30.78.

Carey won the boys 50 meter free in 27.28.

Z. Talley won the girls 100 free in 1:19.86. She also won the 50 free in

35.44. Dawson Epps won the boys 100 butterfly in 1;16.37. Henderson won the 100 butterfly in 1:41.56. Carey won the 100 free in 1:05.58.

The Comets also won the boys 200 free relay in 1:58.59, with Dunavant, Ethan Kirkhart, Burton and Carey competing in that event.

The Comet girls won the 200 free relay in 2:22.20, with Freshour, Talley, Dunn and Henderson representing HCHS.

Epps won the boys 100 back in 1:23.36. Dunn won the girls 100 meter backstroke, in 1:41.50.

The Comets also won the boys 400 free relay in 5:13.26, with Kirkhart, Epps, Joe Smiley and Wyatt Nelson swimming for Halifax.

The girls also won that same event in 6:05.96, with Anna Lewis, Jillian Howerton, Lilian Zhang and Dunn.
